Intro

Unpleasant feelings - and the sense of separateness one experiences when troubled - often transform of their own accord when you are respected and accepted just as you are, however you are.

Or, as Parker Palmer puts it: “The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is.”

Now - as simple as this might sound - it is an extremely rare experience in ordinary circumstances, as the types of habitual reactions Parker mentions are so deeply ingrained in us they happen automatically.

However, this kind of ‘respectful witnessing companionship’ with oneself or others just as we are is the bedrock of mindful communication. Once this type of connection is made solutions to problems often emerge effortlessly, or the problems themselves can diminish or even vanish.

Instructions

  1. Send me a WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram message and describe a situation of pain or celebration in your life in less than 40 words. My number is +44 (0)7895 137314.

  2. Read my response and use your whole body in determining the depth of its truth for you. This could be a sensation of 'landing', 'clicking into place' or simply ‘knowing’. Notice how your body reacts, and especially how or whether it softens somewhere. Whatever clearly emerges in your awareness is the gift of this process. Allow and trust what arises as long as you’re comfortable doing so.

  3. If you wish to deepen the experience, you can feel your bum firmly seated on a comfortable chair and with both feet on the ground, let your shoulders relax and breathe deeply into your belly. Take your time here, allowing whatever happens to happen. Trust your body; trust yourself. Let thoughts come and go. Give space to any feelings. Watch what happens in yourself.
